Hi guys,

I’ll be on vacation for the next two weeks, so don’t expect anything new about Dolphin Viewer during that time.

Happy Whatever-It-Is!

And yet another Dolphin Viewer release!

New in 3.3.7.23790:

  • The Machinima Toolbox has been finalized … for now. I will let you guys use it for a while to see if any tweaks are needed.
  • Two fixes for crashing to desktop while editing a worn non-mesh attachment have been imported from FireStorm.
  • Import and export of your avatar shape to your local hard disk has been ported from the Zen Viewer.
Please note that in order for this function to work, the shape has to be full permission (on Opensim grids), and you also have to be the creator (in Second Life and Second Life Beta). To use this function, edit your shape the usual way – the shape editor has two new buttons for import and export, which will be enabled if the shape meets the permissions criteria.
  • The Dolphin Viewer 3 now uses its own, completely separate, data folder. That way logging in on a different viewer (like the Linden Lab official viewer) does not change your settings or toolbars anymore. On Windows, the data folder is C:\Users\YourUserName\AppData\Roaming\Dolphin Viewer 3, on the mac it is /Users/YourUserName/Library/Application Support/Dolphin Viewer 3, and on linux it is ~/.dolphinviewer3.

The downloads are on the download page, as always.

Here is some information if you want to update to this version without having to set up all your preferences from scratch again:

Some definitions first:

SECONDLIFE is your old second life data folder.
On Windows:
C:\Users\YourWindowsUserName\AppData\Roaming\Second Life
On the mac:
/Users/YourMacUserName/Library/Application Support/Second Life
On linux:
~/.secondlife

DV3 is the new one.
On Windows:
C:\Users\YourWindowsUserName\AppData\Roaming\Dolphin Viewer 3
On the mac:
/Users/YourMacUserName/Library/Application Support/Dolphin Viewer 3
On linux:
~/.dolphin viewer 3

And here is the list of the files that you can / should copy:

From SECONDLIFE/user_settings to DV3/user_settings:
settings_dolphinviewer3.xml
password.dat
stored_favorites.xml
bin_conf.dat
ignorable_dialogs.xml
floater_blist_settings.xml

from SECONDLIFE/avatar_name to DV3/avatar_name
settings_per_account.xml
media_filter.xml
teleport_history.txt
toolbars.xml

I will update the list if I find more files that should be copied.

Here is the most recent Dolphin Viewer release.

You may have noticed that there have been several back-to-back releases recently – both in order to provide the best possible tools for machinima, as well as features in response to many customer requests.

What’s new:

  • Marx Catteneo’s “Film” menu with more handy tweaks for machinima makers and photographers.
  • The Machinima Toolbox has been compacted some more to eliminate the need for scrolling.
  • ‘”Restore to last in-world position” has been ported from FireStorm.
An object, which has been returned/taken back to your inventory, can now be restored to its last in-world co-ordinates. Simply right click the object in your inventory and choose “Restore to Last Position”. Please note you have to be on the same sim as the object’s original location.
  • A Search/Replace function for in-world note cards (from FireStorm) has been added. To use it, open the “Search/Replace” floater via CTRL-f.
  • A way to make your avatar phantom has also been ported from FireStorm. Think of it as a client-side move lock, which is triggered with CTRL-ALT-p, or in the menu item Me->My Movement->Phantom.
  • Several small bugs in the UI layout have been fixed.
  • Some redundant code has been removed.

The downloads are on the download page as usual; the rpm packages for openSUSE 11.4 and 12.1 will follow as soon as the openSUSE build service is back to working normally.

Here’s the next Dolphin, version 3.3.5 “Fellini”, and this one is especially for you machinima creators out there.

A big thank you goes to Marx Catteneo’s for his Machamera floater, now  included in Dolphin in a slightly modified version (with tabs in order to fit on the screen of smaller laptops). Basically, the Machinima Toolbox floater (found in the menu under “World”, as well as through an optional toolbar button called “Machinima Toolbox”) provides:

  • A “Graphics” tab with most of the graphics preferences, and buttons to get to the Windlight editors.
  • A “Camera” tab with settings and buttons for FlyCam, and Alt-zooming.
  • A “Shadows & Occlusion” tab that offers detailed settings for lighting, shadows, and ambient occlusion.
  • A “Depth of field” tab with detailed settings for depth of field.
  • A “Glow” tab with lots of tweaks for how glowy things appear.
  • A “Derender” tab with some countermeasures against visual spamlag.

Also new:

  • Getting a worn attachment into edit by right-clicking it in your inventory and selecting “Edit”-
  • Opening a Landmark on the map from your inventory, similar to what you can do from within the Places window.

The downloads are on the download page.

Here is the next Dolphin Viewer 3 for you, 3.3.4.23747 “Armageddon”.

  • The “Local Textures” feature has been replaced by the implementation that will appear in the official Linden Lab™ viewer (currently in the Lab’s development viewer).
  • The two AO buttons in the toolbar have been combined into one.
  • Some unnecessary log messages have been removed.

The download links are on the download page, as usual.

Armageddon … because of the version number: 3.3.4.23747 and the non-obvious brain salto to this video clip.

Here’s the next version of the Dolphin Viewer, 3.3.3.23731 “Issos”

New, changed or fixed in this release:

  • The avatar offset reset button in the status panel is now properly hidden in mouse look.
  • A new setting in Preferences -> Dolphin Viewer 3 -> UI that controls what the Dolphin does when a scripted object sends you several menu popups at the same time.
  • A new reset button in the extended build options floater, which resets the pivot offset options so that the coordinate origin is back in the center of the object again. My wife is happy about this one.
  • A fix for how fading music in and out behaves when you teleport within the same parcel.
  • A fix for the bug that prohibits the mouse cursor from switching back to the normal arrow shape when hovering over certain UI elements.

Why “Issos”? Click the link above :)

The downloads are on the download page, the system packages for openSUSE 11.4 and 12.1 will follow as soon as the openSUSE build service has caught up after last night’s outage.

The Easter bunny has brought the next Dolphin Viewer 3: 3.3.2.23722

New in this release:

  • Checkbox for “Highlight selection” on the build tools floater.
  • Checkbox for “Pivot axis at root prim” on the build tools floater.
  • The pivoting offset controls and the “Rez with land group” checkbox have been duplicated onto the build options floater for faster access.
  • ID3 info to chat now works on linux systems that do not use FMOD (that means you can get song titles on linux now without using FMOD).
  • Cosmetics and cleanup on the preferences floater.
  • Cosmetics on the build tools floater.

Downloads are on the download page, as usual.

Here is the next Dolphin Viewer 3 for you all, a bit earlier than usual, because the last one was actually a rush release because of the Merchant Outbox.

Here’s the list of new things:

  • Mesh upload, thanks to Nicky Perian from Kokua.
  • It is now possible to attach a short message to a direct avatar-to-avatar payment, which will show up in the recipient’s transaction history (imported from Firestorm).
  • Some internal tweaks and fixes to the gstreamer audio playback plugin and the Client AO.

Downloads are on the download page.

Here’s the next version of the Dolphin Viewer for your entertainment.

This release is quite important for Second Life Marketplace merchants, since it contains a working Merchant Outbox for Direct Delivery with an additional tweak from FireStorm.

New in this release:

  • Full support for direct Delivery, including Merchant Outbox, which uploads on linux and Mac, not just Windows.
  • The timeout for Merchant Outbox upload has been doubled to make it fail less often.
  • The “RLV Height offset” slider is now wide enough to be properly functional, and has a reset button.
  • A checkbox to disable rendering of attached light sources has been added in Preferences->Dolphin Viewer 3->Graphics.
Now it is much easier to disable those evil mega-facelights :-)
  • A fix for scripted sounds from FireStorm has been imported that makes scripted sounds play correctly the first time.
  • Codebase has been updated to official 3.3.1 source from SnowStorm.
  • RLV has been updated to 2.08.03.01.

The downloads are on the download page, as usual.

As most of you should know, Linden Lab™ has rolled out what they named “Direct Delivery”, a new technique to deliver Second Life Marketplace purchases to customers that does not utilize Magic boxes anymore.

If you do not sell anything on the Second Life Marketplace, most of this post does not concern you, since receiving Direct Delivery items from the Marketplace works as it should. All you will need to know, is that you have a new ‘Received Items’ folder, where all your SL Marketplace purchases will go if the merchant uses Direct Delivery.

If you do sell things on the Marketplace, please read on:

During this roll-out, Linden Lab™ has followed their true and trusted procedures and changed course in the last second, by announcing that Magic Boxes will cease to function in May 2012, in total disagreement with all their previous statements which were to the effect that Magic Boxes would continue to work for some time.

What you need to know is that uploading your products to the Second Life Marketplace does not work on linux or Mac OS X right now, and does not work reliably on Windows on any viewer, including the official Linden Lab™ viewer.

The reports on the JIRA seem to indicate that, at least on Windows, it can help to switch your viewer language to English.

My own findings show that the “Merchant Outbox” has other very volatile issues as well, such as not even showing up all the time.

For now, if you have to migrate items from your old Magic Box, use the original 3.3.0 Viewer for Windows from Linden Lab, which is available here. If this is not an option for you because you do not run a Windows operating system, I suggest that you comment to that effect on the JIRA. The links are further up in this post.

Here is the planned migration schedule:

  • April 2 through 13, 2012: Inworld Q&A sessions on using and migrating to Direct Delivery
  • April 18, 2012: All listings priced L$10 and lower must use Direct Delivery
  • May 16, 2012: Magic Boxes no longer allowed for any Marketplace listing
